Astroscale Releases Video Showing How They’ll Remove Space Debris By Robotic Capture
Japan-based Astroscale launched their ELSA-d craft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in March 2021 from Kazakhstan, and this week, they released a new video showing how their upcoming End of Life Services mission will capture satellites using a robotic arm system.
After getting near a defunct satellite, Astroscale’s ELSA-M craft will match its tumble rate to align and dock with it. It then uses its thrusters to lowers the spacecraft’s orbit before releasing it on a trajectory toward Earth’s atmosphere to burn up. Currently, there are over 27,000 pieces of orbital debris that needs to be cleaned up.
