Ovrdrive USB Drive Can be Set to Self-Destruct When Inserted Wrong
A self-destructing USB drive sounds like something straight from a science fiction movie, but the Ovrdrive USB drive is real and will soon be available for purchase. This 16GB drive would come in handy for journalists reporting from anti-privacy countries, security researchers or just anyone interested in open source hardware.
Open up the case, and you’ll find a Microchip ATtiny24A microcontroller, 16GB of Flash memory, and a USB 2.0 interface controller. Enabling Full Self Destruct (FSD) means breaking a trace on the PCB by overloading the flash memory’s voltage rail. A basic voltage doubler controller next to the microcontroller receieves the Distruct_PWM signal to charge up C14 and C15 to 10 V. The self-destruct signal is then enabled and destroys the flash.
